Does natural resource abundance increase Latin American income inequality ? 1
نویسندگان
چکیده
Why is income inequality higher in Latin America than in East Asia? Is this phenomenon related to the region’s natural resource abundance? Is it a contributor to Latin America’s slow and narrowly focused human capital accumulation? If so, can anything be done to reverse the Latin American trends, or should we think of the region’s fate as unalterable? To help answer these questions, this paper draws upon standard trade theory and cross-sectional empirical analysis to demonstrate that natural-resource-intensive sectors, particularly permanent agriculture, absorb capital that might otherwise flow to manufacturing. This depresses workers’ incentive to accumulate skill and delays industrialization. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: F11; O15

The Impact of Resource Abundance and Resource Inequality on Capital Accumulation in Latin America
We study the impact of natural resource abundance and resource inequality on capital accumulation in a simultaneous model of physical and human capital for a sample of 18 Latin American countries from 1970-2004. We find that physical and human capital are jointly determined, in that human capital has a positive and significant effect on physical capital and vice versa. We show that the long run...
متن کاملLand Abundance, Risk and Return: A Heckscher-Ohlin Linear Programming Approach to FDI
Why is investment in human and physical capital in Latin America lower than in the faster growing economies of East Asia? Is this phenomenon and Latin America’s generally higher income inequality an important consequence of the input requirements and price variability of the regions’ products. To help answer these questions, this paper explores a Heckscher-Ohlin linear program incorporating rea...

We consider four aspects of gender inequalities: differences in labour market participation, differences in occupational status,...
